The digital influencer Evelyn Regly She recently underwent some aesthetic procedures with the aim of correcting abdominal diastasis – a very common condition after pregnancy that involves the separation of the abdominal muscles. Among them, she performed the surgery called MAMI.
Evelyn, who has already been through two pregnancies, had approximately seven centimeters of muscle displacement in her belly – after one or two centimeters, it is considered that diastasis can no longer be resolved with physical exercise and nutrition alone.
When is surgery to correct diastasis recommended?
The problem, which usually appears at the end of pregnancy, happens when the mother is not prepared for muscle distension in the abdominal region.
“If the level is primary, with up to two fingers of distance between the rectus abdominis muscles, it is possible to reverse the situation with exercises after childbirth. Otherwise, only surgery will solve it”, explains Cristiane Carboni, Physiotherapist from Porto Alegre with a master's degree in pelvic floor rehabilitation from the University of Barcelona.
According to Cristiane, the best option is to perform personalized exercises before embarking on conventional physical activity. “If you go straight to abdominal exercise, it could make the situation worse. You have to gain stiffness in your muscles to then progress in the exercise”, explains the professional.
In this case, hypopressive gymnastics, which strengthens the abdomen and pelvic floor, is the first step. If there is no muscle contraction or tension in the region, water aerobics, functional gymnastics or pilates are indicated.
“Normally, within three months the muscles return to normal”, adds Cristiane. The same guidance applies to avoiding the problem during pregnancy.
